The Shaggy Mane (coprinus comatus) is found
throughout North America. It tends to proliferate after a
hard rain, often growing in large colonies. Delicate white
scales cover its bullet shaped cap, giving it a hairy
appearance. As the mushroom matures, the gills curl away
from the stem, melting into black ink from the edge inward.
The mushroom is most flavorful when consumed in the button
stage, before the gills begin to curl up.
