Cladonia transcendens is the most common of the
redfruited Cladonia. It grows up to 4 cm tall on bark and
wood, commonly on stumps, tree bases, and fallen logs, in
low to mid-elevation coniferous forests. The stalk (podetia)
of this yellowish green to gray green lichen arises from the
center of leafy squamules, and is unbranched or sparingly
branched, with poorly developed cups and red apothecia. The
stalk is often covered with powdery soredia- microscopic
reproductive propagules.
