The Cobra Lily (Darlingtonia californica) is a rare carnivorous plant with purple flowers and hooded leaves. It is found in wet meadows and boggy seeps in serpentine and coastal areas of Oregon and Northern California. Nectar glands attract insects into an opening underneath the twisted domed tube. The translucent dome fools the insect into thinking there are escape routes. Downward pointing hairs direct the prey to fluid at the bottom, where they drown and decompose by bacterial action; the plant secretes no enzymes.
