BLUE HERON

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is found throughout North America, standing over 3 feet tall with a wingspan of up to six feet. It stands in shallow waters spearing fish and frogs with its sharp bill, but also eats mice, small reptiles and birds, insects, and aquatic plants. It nests in colonies in tall trees along calm freshwater and seacoasts. The bird flies with a slow, deliberate beat and has a harsh guttural croak.
